Joe Pedersen

Joe’s focus is to help evaluate new investments as well as provide support for portfolio companies; particularly in the area of Chemistry Manufacturing and Controls (CMC). Joe joined PBM Capital in 2020 with 23 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, all with Merck & Co.
Currently, Joe is serving in leadership roles for PBM Capital portfolio companies including Chief Technical Officer for Xalud Therapeutics and Vice President of Manufacturing for Baxis Pharmaceuticals. He has also been helping with the GMP facility design for the Paul and Diane Manning Institute of Biotechnology at The University of Virginia.
Previously at PBM Capital, Joe has served in leadership roles for two portfolio companies that led to successful exits. As CTO at Candel Therapeutics, he helped to lead the company through a period of tremendous growth. During Joe’s time at Candel, he was responsible for the company’s CMC strategy and participated in its IPO. Additionally, Joe served as EVP, Quality of Building Block Nutritionals. In that role, he led the quality organization, created a Quality Management System, and helped to gain the regulatory approval that led to the sale of BBN to a strategic partner.
During his time at Merck, Joe had been in both technical and operational leadership roles across multiple organizations. He has experience with manufacturing small molecule, vaccine and biological products at five different Merck sites in the US and Puerto Rico. Additionally, Joe has worked on several startup projects and has expertise with facility design, plant management, product commercialization, and filing preparation.
Joe has managed large multi-level organizations and has helped to build high performing work teams from just a few employees to large functional groups. Joe’s strong intrapersonal and leadership skills have helped him to successfully lead groups through difficult transitions.
Joe has a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from The University of Virginia.
